Composting 101-Demonstrations for Beginners

When compost is added to soil, it breaks up heavy clay, helps sandy soils retain water and nutrients, and releases essential nutrients. Composting is controlling the natural decay of organic matter. Compost improves your soil. When added to soil, compost breaks up heavy clay soils, helps sandy soils retain water and nutrients, and releases essential nutrients. Compost also contains beneficial microscopic organisms that build up the soil and make nutrients available to plants. Improving your soil is the first step towards growing healthy plants.

We all know how important composting is, but do you know what can and cannot be added to your compost bin? Do you want to understand the decomposition process and carbon to nitrogen ratio?

If you answered yes to any of these and want to learn how to get started, Jennifer Caraway, University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture Agent, in Miller County, will be on hand Saturday, August 27, from 7:00-11:00 a.m. at the Gateway Farmers Market, located at East 9^th and Jefferson Avenue in Texarkana, Arkansas, to answer any questions you have and to supply you with information to start your own compost bin. This will be a come and go session so please feel free to drop by at any time between 7:00-11:00 on Saturday, August 27^th.
