STUTTGART Ark. – Arkansas fruit and vegetable growers and gardeners will have the chance to show the results of their labor Aug. 1 at the Arkansas Rice Expo at the Grand Prairie Center.

“We're always looking for good ways to keep our Rice Expo program fresh every year," said Richard Klerk, Cross County extension agent for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. "We saw this table top competition as a way to put rice in a unique and creative light. We also wanted to give our local produce farmers a chance to show off their goods under the farmers' market tent."

The expo, hosted by the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, attracts about 1,000 participants from 8 a.m. through lunch. The expo will feature a farmers’ market for vendors to sell their locally grown produce to those attending. Space remains available for growers to register and market their products.

Table centerpiece arrangers will compete for prizes by using their creativity to make arrangements using rice in the design for placement on the luncheon tables. Master Gardeners, garden club members and others who wish to enter should register in advance and have their arrangements in place by 9 a.m. Competition is limited to the first 60 arrangements that are entered.

To register for the farmers’ market or the centerpiece arrangements, contact Richard Klerk, Cross County Extension agent, at raklerk@uada.edu or Lee Anderson, Jefferson County Extension agent, at llanderson@uada.edu. Registration forms for either activity are available at http://www.uaex.uada.edu/rice-expo/.

Additional activities at the expo will include Janet Carson, Extension horticulture specialist, delivering presentations on growing vegetables and herbs in home gardens.
