Tips available for coping with the finances of home disasters

LITTLE ROCK – A new guide book is available to help people recover financially from disasters and mitigate potential damages. The document – Disasters and Financial Planning: A Guide for Preparedness and Recovery – is available as a PDF from the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture at http://bit.ly/1NFrapt.
“Floods and tornados can be devastating and send you over the edge financially,” said Laura Connerly, assistant professor of family and consumer economics in the division. “You're better prepared to weather the storm if you take time now to learn how to prepare and respond to a crisis. Plan ahead to safeguard your family, your home, and your finances.”
The guide book was prepared by a partnership of the National Endowment for Financial Education, the American Red Cross and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Here are a few tips from the new guide:
- Assemble a disaster supplies kit.
- Identify the emergencies most likely to happen in your area.
- Know the dangers in your home.
- Know your home’s safety devices.
- Identify the safest places in your home.
- Make an evacuation plan.
- Make an emergency communication plan and identify a meet-up location.
- Post emergency phone numbers in a conspicuous place.
- Make sure you have adequate insurance for home, health, and life. Understand the terms.
