Extension’s Walkingstick named to USDA Forest Resource Coordinating Committee

LITTLE ROCK -- Tamara Walkingstick, associate director of the Arkansas Forest Resource Center and associate professor of Forestry for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, has been appointed to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Resource Coordinating Committee.
Walkingstick was appointed as a Land-Grant University Representative. Representatives on the committee come from a mixture of backgrounds, including private landowners and various state and federal agencies.
“It came as a total surprise to be nominated,” said Walkingstick, who was nominated to the position by Eric Norland, a national program leader for the National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
Walkingstick said the committee, which has about 20 members across the country and meets periodically through conference calling and face-to-face meetings, will focus on the conservation and management of non-industrial forests — those not regularly harvested for the commercial sale of timber — and small woodland areas under private ownership.
Walkingstick said she believes her experience as a forestry expert with the Cooperative Extension Service will bring to the table a hands-on knowledge of effective community teaching techniques.
“As a representative of Extension, my primary clientele has typically been private landowners,” Walkingstick said. “We have experience with what educational approaches and methods might and might not work in a given situation. My role is to give the committee things that we know work, and to bring back to Extension new things we can try here at home.”
Walkingstick’s appointment is for two years.
