FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.  – Using cover crops to manage soils takes the spotlight at the Cover Crop Workshop March 12 at the Rice Research and Extension Center in Stuttgart.

“Cover crops can be a benefit to soil, water and commodity crops planted in their wake,” said Trent Roberts, assistant professor-Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. “This workshop will feature presentations on just about every facet of cover crop use from establishment to termination, but specific to the Mid-South.”

The workshop runs 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. There is no cost to attend, but participants are asked to RSVP to cljamies@uark.edu by 4:30 p.m. March 9 for a lunch count. Attendees may also earn continuing education credits: 1.5 hours for crop management; 0.5 hours for pest management and 2.0 hours for Soil and Water.

    • 9:05 a.m. - Cover Crop Establishment in Arkansas – Trent Roberts, University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture.
    • 9:35 a.m. - Agronomic Benefits of Cover Crops – Jeremy Ross, extension soybean agronomist for the Division of Agriculture
    • 10:15 a.m. - Reducing Soil Erosion and Protecting Water quality with Cover Crops – Mike Daniels, extension water quality and nutrient management specialist with the division
    • 10:45 a.m. -- Cover Crop Termination – Tom Barber, extension weed scientist with the division
    • 11:15 a.m. Pest considerations when using cover crops – Gus Lorenz, extension entomologist for the division
    • 11:45 a.m. – Natural Resources Conservation Services practices to conserve soil and water resources – John Lee, NRCS
    • 1:30 p.m. -- Field tour-Soil stabilization using cover crops
    • 2:30 p.m. --  Adjourn
