FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.  –  Following the confirmation of avian flu in Arkansas, the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture is scheduling a series of workshops to help backyard poultry flock owners protect their livestock.

The workshops are being led by Dustan Clark, an extension veterinarian for the Division of Agriculture and associate director of the Center of Excellence for Poultry Science.

The first workshop was set for Newton County on Thursday, March 12, at the Carroll Electric building in Jasper starting at 6 p.m. For more information, call the Newton County Extension Office at 870-446-2240.

The next workshop is scheduled for Thursday, March 19, in Harrison at the Little Theater, North Arkansas College-South Campus. The workshop begins at 6 p.m. Attendees are asked to RSVP in advance of the event by calling the Boone County Extension Office at 870-741-6168.

“We’re asking our growers to practice biosecurity – a group of actions aimed at preventing the introduction of any disease into your flock or your herd or its spread,” he said. “These workshops are meant to help flock owners sharpen their skills or serve as a good reminder of precautions to take.”

The dates and locations of other workshops are to be announced.

On Tuesday, the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza in a commercial turkey flock in Boone County. The turkey flock is located within the Mississippi flyway where this strain of avian influenza has previously been identified. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers the risk to people from these infections in wild birds, backyard flocks and commercial poultry, to be low.

Information on biosecurity tactics are available in English and Spanish at http://uaex.uada.edu/farm-ranch/biosecurity/default.aspx.

The Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service is an equal opportunity/equal access/affirmative action institution.
