BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Nature lovers will have the opportunity later this month to learn about the native plants of the Ozarks and their historical use by area homesteaders.
The Benton County Cooperative Extension Service and the Peel Compton Foundation will present “Early Ozarks People and Plants: From Native Plants to Farmsteads” May 18, from 6-8 p.m. at Compton Gardens in Bentonville.
The two-hour seminar will focus on the role native plants played in the Arkansas Ozarks ecosystem, from prehistoric times through the early 20th Century. Scheduled speakers include Caven Clark, Chief of Interpretation and Cultural Resources for the Buffalo National River, and Robert Seay, former Benton County extension staff chair for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture.
Neal Mays, Benton County extension agent, said the program was developed after many northwest Arkansas residents expressed an interest in learning about cultivating plants native to the Ozarks landscape.
“Putting it in an anthropological context is an interesting way to do that,” Mays said.
