LITTLE ROCK – A fleet of commuters is planning to trade their gas pedals for bike pedals during Bike to Work day on May 15.
“For us, Bike to Work day is an opportunity to encourage people to get out and exercise,” said LaVona Traywick, associate professor-gerontology for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. “Spring is a great time to get into the exercise habit -- the weather is wonderful and biking is a great excuse to spend time outdoors.”
Bike to Work follows on the heels of Walk Across Arkansas, a Cooperative Extension Service public health initiative that saw 1,010 Arkansans spend more than 1.5 million minutes exercising during an eight-week period that ended in April.
Employees from the University of Arkansas Systems office and its Division of Agriculture are using the Bike to Work event as a public invitation to get moving. This year, the University of Arkansas System’s eVersity joins the effort and the course will see the riders start at the eVersity HQ -- the log cabin on the University of Arkansas Systems Office grounds in Cammack Village. Riders wishing to join the convoy should be there at 6 a.m.
The course will take riders down to the Big Dam Bridge. The riders will wind through downtown to the state Capitol and make their way back to the cabin.
Bike to Work Day originated in 1956 with the League of American Bicyclists. It is held on various days around the country and is part of National Bike Month and National Bike Week, May 11-15.
