LITTLE ROCK – This year, Arkansas youth with a 4-H livestock project might want to pack a camera and some hashtags with their buckets and brushes.
In addition to raising, training and showing their livestock, 4-H youth can also compete in an Instagram and Facebook contest to tell the world about their cattle, goat, sheep and swine projects.
“We saw these contests as a natural extension of what our youth are already doing on Facebook and Instagram,” said Chelsey Ahrens, extension 4-H Youth Livestock specialist for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. “This is an opportunity for our 4-Hers to share their year of hard work and long days as well as the fun and successes that come with raising livestock.”
This year’s contest period began May 20 and will run through 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 24.
There is no limit to the number of times 4-Hers aged 13-19, or the parents of 4-H members aged 9-12 may post about their 4-H Animal Science Show Project. They must use the contest-specific hashtags to enter the contest. Contestants don’t have to stick with just one species if they show more than one.
Contestants may enter videos or still images such as selfies with their show project.
The winner will be selected from a panel of judges to be comprised of, but not limited to Arkansas Extension personnel, industry stakeholders, producers, or other individuals involved in the field of animal science, youth development, and/or communications. The judges’ decisions are final.
The contest will have monthly winners as well as a grand prize winner.
