Turfgrass shortcourse set for Jan. 4-5 at new Tyson Center

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Turfgrass identification, pests and best mowing practices are among the topics on the agenda for the Jan. 4-5, 2018, Turfgrass Shortcourse being held at the new Don Tyson Center for Agricultural Sciences, 1371 W. Altheimer Dr. in Fayetteville.

“This is a great course for people who may have recently entered the industry or would just like a good refresher course on some of the fundamentals of turfgrass management,” said Mike Richardson, professor-Horticulture, for the U of A System Division of Agriculture. 

The short course is co-sponsored by University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture and Oklahoma State University. Programs start at 8 a.m. each day and wrap up at 5 p.m. Lunch and snacks are provided. Continuing education units for Oklahoma and Arkansas have been applied for.

The tentative lineup of topics and speakers:

  • Disease management - Nathan Walker, professor-Entomology/Plant Pathology, Oklahoma State.
  • Weed management and calibration - John Boyd, professor-Weed Science, U of A System Division of Agriculture.
  • Insect management - Eric Rebek, associate professor-Entomology/Plant Pathology, Oklahoma State.
  • Turfgrass selection - Dennis Martin, professor-Horticulture/Landscape Architecture, Oklahoma State.
  • Turfgrass ID and irrigation - Justin Moss, associate professor- Horticulture/Landscape Architecture, Oklahoma State.
  • Turfgrass establishment and mowing - Mike Richardson, professor-Horticulture, U of A System Division of Agriculture.
  • Cultivation - Doug Karcher, professor-Horticulture, U of A System Division of Agriculture.

Karcher and Richardson will also be on the education agenda for the annual Arkansas Turfgrass Association trade show, Jan. 11-12 at the Hot Springs Convention Center.
