LITTLE ROCK – Are all those holiday indulgences weighing you down? The spring edition of Walk Across Arkansas, which begins Feb. 26 and runs through April 22, may help improve the numbers on your scale.
Walk Across Arkansas is one of the largest public health initiatives in Arkansas, with more than 2,200 people taking part last year. Participation isn’t limited to walking. Walk Across Arkansas is open to any kind of exercise – run, paddle, bike – just keep track of your time.
Getting involved is easy. Gather a team of two to 10 people and register at www.uaex.uada.edu/walk.
Come Sunday, Feb. 26, start hitting the pavement. Record the number of minutes you walk or do other exercise for eight weeks.
“Getting started with an exercise program is easier when you have teammates who support and encourage you and help keep you accountable,” said Lisa Washburn, associate professor-health for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. “And if a little competitive nature kicks in, so much the better!”
Last year, Walk Across Arkansas participants racked up more than 3.6 million minutes of exercise over the eight weeks with an estimated healthcare cost savings of $360,739 for the entire state, Washburn said.
