FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Tackling obesity will require the strength of a team and that’s the idea behind the Center for Human Nutrition, a multi-discipline initiative designed to bring together faculty conducting nutrition-related research in northwest Arkansas.

CFHN

The Center for Human Nutrition, or CFHN was established in 2001, and is being relaunched by the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, one of 20 educational entities within the University of Arkansas System. CFHN’s advisory committee is comprised of faculty from the Division, the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and the University of Arkansas for Medical Science Northwest. The three institutions that co-developed the initiative, its goals and research pillars.

“The mission of Center for Human Nutrition, or CFHN, is simple:  we are working together to conduct the research that will improve health, productivity and quality of life,” said Jamie Baum, assistant professor-Food Science, for the Division of Agriculture. “We currently have more than 30 members conducting research in nutrition-related topics ranging from basic science to community interventions.

Baum said the center’s five research pillars are:

  • Metabolism
  • Environment
  • Behavior
  • Physical Activity
  • Policy.

“As we move forward in the next year, our focus will be to reach out to all faculty across the three campuses actively conducting research in one of the five research pillars,” Baum said. “As we continue to grow, we will work with members on a funding strategy to help put the CFHN on the local and national map.”

Research retreat

The center is co-sponsoring the Arkansas Nutrition, Obesity and Health Research Retreat on Oct. 25-27 at the new Don Tyson Center for Agricultural Sciences with the University of Arkansas, Division of Agriculture, UAMS, Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Center, and Arkansas Children’s Research Institute.

If you are interested in joining the CFHN please send a brief statement describing how your research program fits with the mission and goals of the CFHN, and which research pillar fits with your research program to Jamie Baum at baum@uark.edu.  More information about the Center for Human Nutrition can be found on the website: https://nutrition.uark.edu.
