LITTLE ROCK— As we move closer to the holidays, we also move closer to the start of the new year—and the start of tax season.

According to a 2017 Pew Research Center study, 43 percent of Americans are bothered by the complexity of the tax system. Frustrated tax payers often turn to tax preparation professionals to navigate the maze of deductions and forms.

The University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service’s Income Tax School is a two-day course that provides tax preparers and anyone else interested in advanced income tax preparation with the latest updates in the tax code. The instructors, Carl and Vickie Becker, are tax experts with extensive experience with the Internal Revenue Service. Carl Becker worked for the IRS for 28 years and Vickie Becker is a former certified public accountant and a 30-year IRS employee.

“We are one of a limited number of face-to-face training opportunities offered in Arkansas,” said Kim Magee, extension community and economic development program associate for the Division of Agriculture. “Our coordinator and instructors not only offer instruction to the participants during the trainings, but also offer support throughout the year as needed.”

The course is also approved by the IRS as a continuing education provider. Participants can earn 16 hours of continuing professional education credit, including two hours of ethics.

The Income Tax School will be held in five cities around Arkansas, including:

  • Fayetteville—Nov. 13-14 at The Chancellor Hotel
  • Fort Smith—Nov. 16-17 at the Fort Smith Convention Center
  • Jonesboro—Nov. 27-28 at the Hilton Garden Inn
  • Little Rock—Nov. 30-Dec. 1 at the U of A Division of Agricultural Cooperative Extension Service
  • Hot Springs—Dec. 4-5 at the Clarion Resort on the Lake

Registration starts at 8 a.m. on the first day. The cost of the two-day course is $220. Class runs from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. A certificate of attendance will be awarded after class is dismissed on the second day.
