FAYETTEVILLE – University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture Communication Services Intern Emily Thompson is the 2018 recipient of the Elizabeth Messner Barnes ’38 Scholarship. The scholarship is given out by the University of Arkansas School of Journalism and Strategic Media and covers full tuition, fees and books for one year.
“The entire faculty was impressed by Emily’s journalism experience, leadership in student media and academic achievement,” said Rob Wells, Ph.D., assistant professor at the School of Journalism and Strategic Media. “The Elizabeth Barnes Messner Scholarship is one of the top awards we make as a department each year. Emily more than fulfilled the qualifications with her excellent academic record, her experience as Razorback yearbook editor and as a writer for Division of Agriculture’s communications department. She is getting material published in newspapers throughout Arkansas nearly every week, a record very few of our journalism students can match. She is a natural leader and we are delighted the Messner Scholarship went to such an outstanding student this year.”
Thompson joined Division of Agriculture Communications in November 2016. Since then, she’s written over 50 stories covering everything from 4-H to the latest findings published by Division researchers. She also serves as the editor in chief of the Razorback Yearbook. She will graduate from the University of Arkansas with a B.A. in journalism in May 2019.
The scholarship was established and endowed by Michael and Jenny Messner in 2005 to commemorate Michael Messner’s mother, the late Elizabeth Barnes Messner. Elizabeth Barnes Messner graduated in 1938 from the University of Arkansas with a degree in journalism. She was the first woman to become business manager of the Arkansas Traveler, the campus student-run newspaper.
“I am so honored to be chosen to receive the Elizabeth Messner Barnes ’38 Scholarship out of all the other incredibly talented applicants,” Thompson said. “This scholarship will allow me to focus on my studies my senior year as I strive to become the best journalist I can be without worrying about how I will pay my tuition—a gift that I am grateful for.”
