Muscadine grape breeding program to be highlighted at Field Day, Sept. 11

CLARKSVILLE, Ark.— The 2018 Muscadine Grape Workshop and Field Day will take attendees through the process of getting a grape from vine to consumer.

The event will take place Sept. 11 from 2:00-7:30 p.m. at the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture Fruit Research Station in Clarksville, Arkansas. The workshop and field day is sponsored by the Arkansas Association of Grape Growers and the Division of Agriculture.

“The Arkansas Association of Grape Growers is honored to work with the University of Arkansas to host another muscadine workshop in Arkansas,” said Renee Threlfall, Division of Agriculture food scientist. “The grape growers and processors in the state and surrounding area excited about the potential to learn more about muscadine production and network with other industry partners.”

Attendees will hear from a variety of experts about grape production, establishing a vineyard and vineyard pest and disease management, as well as get a firsthand look at the Division’s muscadine grape breeding program with a field tour.

Speakers include:

  • John Clark, director of the Division of Agriculture fruit breeding program, and Margaret Worthington, assistant professor at the University of Arkansas- Overview of the Muscadine Breeding Program
  • Amanda McWhirt, Extension horticulture specialist- Considerations in Establishing a Grape Vineyard
  • Jackie Lee, Extension horticulture specialist- Pest Management in a Vineyard
  • Bill Cline, entomology and plant pathology specialist at North Caroline State University- Disease Management in Muscadine Vineyards
  • Jeff Bloodworth, private North Carolina muscadine breeder- Future of the Muscadine Grape

Registration is $20 for AAGG members and $30 for nonmembers. Registration is due Sept. 7 and includes dinner.
