PARIS, Ark. – Cattle genetics will be at the top of the River Valley Beef Cattle Conference agenda, to be held Feb. 13 at the Hughes Center in Russellville.

CATTLE CONFERENCE -- The 2019 River Valley Beef Cattle Conference is scheduled for Feb. 13.

“This will be a great opportunity for those in the beef cattle industry here to get to know Dr. Charles Looney, the Division of Agriculture’s newly hired expert on beef cattle improvement,” said Bob Harper, Logan County extension staff chair for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. “We’ll also have a panel discussion of beef cattle producers, which is a chance for our livestock producers to hear what is happening among their peers.”

Conference registration is $20 per person and the Hughes Center is located at 1000 E. Parkway Avenue, Russellville. For more information about the conference, contact your county extension office.

The conference opens at 8 a.m. with registration. This year’s agenda: 

  • 9:05 a.m. - Welcome - Perry McCourt, Farm Credit Services of Western Arkansas
  • 9:10 a.m. - Reproductive technologies for genetic improvement - Charles Looney, U of A System Division of Agriculture
  • 9:40 a.m. - Using DNA or genomic tests in commercial production: a producer panel with Leanna Clark, Michael Lee and Jim Moore, moderated by Shane Gadberry, professor-ruminant nutrition, U of A System Division of Agriculture
  • 10:20 a.m. - GoGREEN program - Shane Gadberry
  • 10:25 a.m. - Break
  • 10:40 a.m. - Using winter annuals and baleage options - John Jennings, professor-forage, U of A System Division of Agriculture
  • 11:25 a.m. - Controlling unwanted grasses - John Boyd, assistant professor of Crop, Soils and Environmental Science, U of A System Division of Agriculture
