Jiangchao Zhao presented at the inaugural Charles Maxwell Appreciation Club Symposium on early pig health and nutrition held during the 2020 ASAS Midwest Section/ADSA Midwest Branch Joint Meeting from March 2-4 in Omaha, Neb. Zhao, associate professor-animal science for the division’s Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station, discussed how early-life modulation of the gut microbiome has long-term effects on swine health and production.

The symposium and the appreciation club are named in honor of Charles Maxwell, professor-animal science, who specializes in swine nutrition. He has conducted research at the Division of Agriculture and taught in the University of Arkansas’ Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Science since 1996. He was on the faculty of Oklahoma State University for 28 years before that.

John Jennings, professor-forages for the division’s Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service, presented at the Arkansas Forage and Grassland Council meeting on Feb.13 in Conway. He discussed techniques for managing nitrogen in grass/legume systems.

Shane Gadberry, professor-ruminant nutrition for the Cooperative Extension Service, spoke to a standing-room only crowd at the River Valley Beef Conference on Feb. 18 in Ozark, Ark. He discussed GoGreen and other value-added programs.

Department of Animal Science Head Michael Looper spoke to a full house at the first Arkansas Cattlemen’s Association Area Conference on March 3 in Batesville, Ark. He provided information about the Division of Agriculture, the statewide heifer sale and how Division of Agriculture research and extension scientists are working to help beef producers meet the challenges of food production in the 21st century.

The Division of Agriculture’s department of animal science is serving as a signature sponsor for the nine ACA Area Spring Conferences.
