Volunteers needed for Nov. 18 Coleman Creek clean-up

LITTLE ROCK — Coleman Creek is home to plentiful Arkansas native wildlife that thrive in its waters and surrounding watershed. Unfortunately, the creek is also home to tires, electronics, plastic packaging and other trash that pollutes the water.
Keeping a mile-long section of the creek free of such debris is an ongoing effort by the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture and UA Little Rock. Coleman Creek flows along and through the shared campuses, which host twice-a-year clean-ups. The efforts are part of Keep Arkansas Beautiful and the Arkansas Watershed Stewardship program, which encourages and assists Arkansans in improving watersheds and water quality.
The next Coleman Creek Clean-up is Nov. 18, and volunteers are needed.
“We are hoping for a great volunteer turn-out like we had in the spring on Earth Day,” said John Pennington, extension water quality educator for the Division of Agriculture. “Protecting our natural resources is an ongoing effort, and our efforts ultimately affect the quality of our water resources.”
Coleman Creek is a tributary of Fourche Creek, which flows into the Arkansas River, the Mississippi River and ultimately the Gulf of Mexico.

Volunteers can join the clean-up effort beginning at 3 p.m. at either of two start locations: the Cooperative Extension Service state office parking lot, 2301 S. University Ave., or at the UA Little Rock parking deck bridge by Lot 12. Volunteers should wear clothes for walking in the woods and along the creek bank.
