Randy's Plant Pick: Limelight Hydrangea (Hydrangea Paniculata)
The showy greenish-white flowers of Limelight Hydrangea blooming right now in the landscape are a showstopper!
I love the refreshing bloom color of this plant. Especially during the heat of summer.
Limelight hydrangea is popular because, once established, very little maintenance is required. Another added benefit is that it has no serious pest problems.
As for growing conditions, it really depends on your climate. It loves morning sun,
but it can take afternoon sun. Just remember, if it is getting afternoon sun, once
it starts blooming, our hot summer temperatures will cause the blooms to dry out more
quickly. Try to avoid windy spots.
As for most plants, Limelight Hydrangea prefers a rich well-drain soil. The good thing
about this hydrangea, the pH of the soil will not affect bloom color.
Limelight Hydrangeas have moderate watering needs once they are established. They do best in evenly moist soil. In a dry spell, make sure that is getting a deep watering once a week.
If you want to plant a smaller variety of Limelight, two other options are available:
- 'Limelight Prime', a smaller variety that only reaches 4 to 6 feet in height.
- 'Little Lime', the smallest variety with a compact, mature height of 4 feet.
The good thing about all panicle hydrangeas, limelight hydrangea blooms on new wood (growth from the current year) so any pruning should be done in February before new growth starts.
