Arkansas Animal and Forage Resources

The animal agriculture sector includes production and processing of poultry, eggs, beef and dairy products, sheep and goats, swine and other animals. Beef cattle and poultry are companion enterprise on many farms, with poultry providing cash flow and fertilizer for pastures.

Beef Cattle

Cattle are raised in every county, with an inventory of over 1,600,000  head.

Dairy Cattle

Also called dairy cows or milk cows, dairy cattle are bred for the ability to produce large quantities of milk from which dairy products are made.

Whether your interested in trail riding, competitive riding, or just having fun, learn basic horse care. 

Pastures & Forages

There are 6 million acres of forage in Arkansas. That's more than soybeans, rice and cotton combined. 

Poultry

Arkansas is 2nd in the nation for broiler (chicken) production raising over 1 billion chickens per year and is 3rd in the nation for turkey production. 

Sheep & Goats

Sheep and goat production is popular with many beginning farmers and is a new enterprise for others. 

Manure & Mortality Management

Proper manure and mortality management is essential for profitable production and environmental protection. 

Rabbits

Many individuals raise rabbits for meat, hair, and hides as small alternative livestock production or as pets.

Swine

Extension assists the swine industry through educational programs regarding waste management, 4-H swine projects, and feral hogs.

Llamas and Alpacas

Llamas and alpacas are a unique, growing industry in Arkansas. Llamas can be used as guardian animals whereas alpacas are typically raised for their fiber.
