LeadAR Class 20 Member Spotlight: Chelsea Boozer
LeadAR Class 20 member Chelsea Boozer is the executive director of Rogue Water Lab. We asked her to respond to the following questions.
Why did you apply to the LeadAR program? What motivated you?
I am really looking forward to the statewide outlook and specific focus on economic development and government affairs that the LeadAR program offers. The statewide perspective and outlook provided by this program is my biggest opportunity for growth and learning through LeadAR. Having have gotten to intern in Washington, D.C. one summer and study abroad in Germany the next during my undergraduate studies, I also know how invaluable outside perspective can be and I appreciate the national and international study focuses that are incorporated in the LeadAR program.
What leadership quality do you admire most in others? Why?
Vulnerability. We are all humans and leadership is about leading people. When you show your vulnerability, that's when true connections can be made and you humanize your leadership decisions. Vulnerability is hard. Really hard. And the old-school way of leadership was to put on a face and not show your humanity. Breaking that mold is important to be a leader whom others trust, respect, and want to follow.
What is something people would be surprised to learn about you? Why is this surprising?
Growing up, all the way through junior high, I was debilitatingly shy. This is surprising to people because now I'm an outgoing, in-the-spotlight, talkative extravert who loves connecting with others, meeting strangers, getting on stage, and networking.
What are your top three ingredients necessary for success?
Collaboration. Trust. Passion
What are your top three ingredients necessary for happiness?
Confidence (valuing yourself.) Grace. Hope.
Describe your personal leadership style.
I am a collaborative leader. I believe the best outcomes are born from discussions where everyone's viewpoint is sought after, welcomed, and valued.
What is something you hope to gain from your LeadAR experience?
I am interested in the diversity of thought born from the diverse backgrounds of the cohort and I look forward to learning how to engage and collaborate with others who I likely disagree with in some aspects, yet we still successfully work together toward a shared goal or mission.
How can effective leadership help move the state of Arkansas forward?
Effective leaders can be transformational -- gaining followers, changing mindsets, improving policies, practices, programs, and people. In Arkansas, that can lead to better education, better quality of life, better public policy, and increased economic development and prosperity.
LeadAR is a program designed to help Arkansans broaden their understanding of issues and opportunities facing our state and strengthen their ability to make a difference.
