LeadAR Day 1: Placemaking, Passion and Progress in Blytheville

by Tonya Fletcher, executive director, Paris Area Chamber of Commerce - May 27, 2026

LeadAR Class 21 standing on stairsBlytheville, Arkansas, is a powerful reminder that resilient communities are built by people with vision, passion, and determination.

Our LeadAR class was graciously hosted by LeadAR Class 19 alum Courtney Fisher, whose 23 years of service and dedication to the region were evident throughout the day. From the beautifully restored Greyhound Bus Station, now home to the Main Street Blytheville program, to the revitalized Ritz Theater, the community has embraced placemaking in meaningful ways.

Leaders in Blytheville are preserving history while creating spaces that encourage tourism, economic growth, and community pride. Hearing how David Gullic, LeadAR Class 10, transformed the bus station through his LeadAR project and seeing the continued investment in downtown redevelopment was incredibly inspiring.

One of the most impressive themes throughout the tour was Blytheville’s ability to adapt and innovate for the future. Stops like Flatland Financial highlighted entrepreneurs identifying unique opportunities within emerging industries, while organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce continue investing in leadership programs, literacy initiatives, and community partnerships. The vision for the National Cold War Center was especially impactful, showcasing how Blytheville’s historic role during the Cold War could become a national tourism destination and economic driver for the region.

The day concluded at the stunning Arkansas Northeastern College campus in Wilson, where history, education, and community investment intersect beautifully. Learning about the Great River Promise program, funded by Nucor to provide free tuition for Mississippi County graduates, demonstrated a true commitment to workforce development and future generations. Blytheville and Mississippi County are communities that have faced challenges, yet continue finding creative and forward-thinking ways to grow. Their resilience, passion, and dedication to building a stronger future left a lasting impression on our entire LeadAR class.
