David Long headshotLeadAR Class 20 member David Long is director of engineering at Cromwell Architects Engineers, Inc. We asked him to respond to the following questions.

Why did you apply to the LeadAR program? What motivated you?

I had a great experience with a local chamber leadership program and wanted to experience something similar for the entirety of Arkansas. I'm looking forward to learning more about my home state, gaining new skills, and meeting new people.

What leadership quality do you admire most in others? Why?

A servant attitude is the leadership quality I admire most in others because I believe the best way to lead is to enable others to be and do their best.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you? Why is this surprising?

One of my favorite hobbies is swing dancing, this can surprise people as it's not generally a well-known/popular hobby.

What are your top three ingredients necessary for success?

Intentionality, a flexible plan, and support/help from others.

What are your top three ingredients necessary for happiness?

Gratitude, support of loved ones, sharing with others.

Describe your personal leadership style.

I have a decisive yet adaptable leadership style. I make strategic decisions quickly based high level information but allow for flexibility and adjustments as necessary while moving forward. I keep a strong emphasis on motivation and recognition of the team to create and encourage individual and team growth.

What is something you hope to gain from your LeadAR experience?

I hope to gain a better understanding of the challenges and successes of geographic regions of Arkansas outside of NWA, which is what I am most familiar with. I look forward to having a broader view of what is important statewide and sharing lessons learned.

How can effective leadership help move the state of Arkansas forward?

I believe that leaders in Arkansas should have a number one goal of economic development. Effective leadership in that regard should focus on supporting existing businesses within the state while encouraging new industry creation within or relocation to our state by emphasizing business friendly policies. Workforce development is also needed to support that economic growth, especially the development of skills within the people already here.

Economic growth across the state will provide more opportunities for all Arkansans.

What else do you want others to know about you?

Having new experiences is my favorite part of life, I love gathering new stories to tell. The only thing that beats going on a new adventure or trying a new activity is sharing and enjoying that moment with others.

LeadAR is a program designed to help Arkansans broaden their understanding of issues and opportunities facing our state and strengthen their ability to make a difference.
