Blackberries in Arkansas
June marks the start of blackberry season here in Arkansas and local berries can be found at farmers markets and U-Picks across the state. Read on to find out why it's great to eat blackberries and one of our favorite ways to enjoy them.
So why do we eat blackberries?
Blackberries are rich in vitamin C, fiber, antioxidants, and other phytochemicals that may help prevent cancer, heart disease, and age-related diseases. They are a part of the fruit group and can be eaten fresh or frozen. In season blackberries are best served freshly washed. Place them in a bowl with water and gently stir. Gently remove the berries, dry them, and enjoy!
Where can I find Arkansas Grown blackberries?
Blackberries can be grown across the state of Arkansas and can be grown in a home garden, raised beds or containers with a good potting soil mix.
While blackberry's are ready to pick in Arkansas now, you can enjoy the taste and benefits of blackberries year-round with frozen berries from your local grocery store.
