Black Eyed Susan

For several years I have had a great crop of Black Eyed Susan's...of course, they reseed & I have more every year. This year they aren't as tall as previous years & not near as many blooms.  What happened? The only thing I can think of is maybe they have gotten too thick & I need to thin out.  What are your thoughts?

If they are too crowded it can impact blooming, both in size and quantity of blooms.  Black-eyed Susan’s also like hot, dry weather, so the extra rain early on may have slowed them down.  As hot as it has been recently, they may be rebounding.
